Description: A homeowner noticed a growing black spot on the ceiling of their home’s master bathroom. Once the owner’s insurance agent was contacted and testing was completed, the presence of mold was confirmed. Upon further inspection, the source of the problem was determined to be a leaky pipe in the attic near the water heater. TDT Plumbing utilized ePipe to restore the system and protect the Sugar Land, TX home from future mold producing leaks.

THE PROBLEM:

Early in 2002, the homeowner of a 3,300 square-foot-home, built in Sugar Land, TX in 1979, noticed a growing black spot on the ceiling of the master bathroom. Once the owner’s insurance agent was contacted and testing was completed, the presence of mold was confirmed. Upon further inspection, the source of the problem was determined to be a leaky pipe in the attic near the water heater. To add to problem, the homeowner had a special needs child who was sensitive to toxins such as mold or poor water quality. After consulting with three different plumbers, the homeowner was told that the only solution would be to completely re-pipe the entire home to be sure that this problem would not surface again and cause further damage and/or health issues for the family. Repiping estimates ranged from $8,100 to $12,000, with additional costs associated with tearing out and rebuilding the walls and floors. Any costs associated with repiping would not be covered by insurance. In addition, repiping the house would cost major delays in completing the home’s restoration.

THE SOLUTION:

Since the homeowner was going through the mold remediation process and all the costs associated with that, repiping and the time factor associated with re-building were not an option. The non-invasive, cost-saving process of the ACE DuraFlo®system from TDT Plumbing became the answer to their problem. In addition to the cost savings, the added benefit of improved water quality was a plus with the health concerns of the family.

TDT Plumbing technicians began work on a Monday. By Thursday, everything was finished and plumbing was restored to the home. Water pressure, which had suffered, was restored and the water quality was greatly improved. The plumbing system in the home had become pitted with pinholes and rust spots that would have surely created the same water leakage problems within six months to a year. The ACE DuraFlo®system sealed all potential future problems and gave the homeowner peace of mind that the family would not have to go through a mold remediation again. Work on other areas of the home continued on schedule to ensure that the family was back in the home with all concerns being addressed.
